An homage to all Mothers for Mother's Day!!

JUST A MOM?
A woman, renewing her driver's license at the County Clerk 's office, was asked by the woman recorder to state her occupation.

She hesitated, uncertain how to classify herself"What I mean is," explained the recorder, "Do you have a job or are you just a ....?"

"Of course I have a job," snapped the woman.

"I'm a Mom."

"We don't list 'Mom' as an occupation, 'Housewife' covers it, said the recorder emphatically.

I forgot all about her story until one day I found myself in the same situation, this time at our own Town Hall. The Clerk was obviously a career woman, poised, efficient, and possessed of a high sounding title like, "Official Interrogator" or "Town

Registrar."

"What is your occupation?" she probed.

What made me say it? I do not knowthe words simply popped out. "I'm a Research Associate in the field of Child Development and Human Relations."

The clerk paused, ball-point pen frozen in midair and looked up as though she had not heard right.

I repeated the title slowly emphasizing the most significant words. Then I stared with wonder as my pronouncement was written, in bold, black ink on the official questionnaire.

"Might I ask," said the clerk with new interest, "just what you do in your field?"

Coolly, without any trace of fluster in my voice, I heard myself reply, "I have a continuing program of research, (what mother doesn't) In the laboratory and in the field, (normally I would have said indoors and out). I'm working for my Masters, (first the Lord and then the whole family) and already have four credits (all daughters). Of course, the job is one of the most demanding in the humanities, (any mother care to disagree?) and I often work 14 hours a day, (24 is more like it). But the job is more challenging than most run-of-the-mill careers and the rewards are more of a satisfaction rather than just money."
There was an increasing note of respect in the clerk's voice as she completed the form, stood up, and personally ushered me to the door.

As I drove into our driveway, buoyed up by my glamorous new career, I was greeted by my lab assistants -- ages 13, 7, and 3. Upstairs I could hear our new experimental model, (a 6 month old baby) in the child development program, testing out a new vocal pattern. I felt I had scored a beat on bureaucracy! And I had gone on the official records as someone more distinguished and indispensable to mankind than "just another Mom."
Motherhood!

What a glorious career! Especially when there's a title on the door

Does this make grandmothers "Senior Research associates in the field of Child Development and Human Relations"

And great grandmothers "Executive Senior Research Associates?" I think so!!!

I also think it makes Aunts "Associate Research Assistants."

May your troubles be less, may your blessing be more,
And nothing but happiness to come through your door!

Menopause Makeover on Today Show!

A group of us authors and dedicated readers have been doing the Menopause Makeover and blogging on Eharlequin's website about it.  We've been tracking our weight and calories and exercise and everyone single one of us has reached some kind of goal we've set for ourselves.

Today our fearless leader and author of the Menopause Makeover was interviewed by Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda on the Today Show.  Did you see it?   I hope you get a chance to read the book and take all of Staness' advice on how to improve your health and feel better during and after menopause.

Ladies!  Take note:  This really works.  And if you could do it with a group, there's nothing better. Our support group is fabulous!  We blog every day and cheer each other on.

AMERICAN IDOL...GOTTA LOVE ELLEN!

                                         ***

I like Ellen DeGeneres. I like her talk-show and I like her as a judge.  She's honest, but nice and she's funny!

Talk about breaking tension.  Even when she doesn't like someone's performance, she finds a way to make a joke or console the person.  She's a good balance to Simon.

I'll admit, I'm hooked. I really enjoy this show but haven't been wowed by any one particular artist.

Here's my predictions for the Top Five!  Can't predict the winners yet. I really like all five of these artists and they all have different styles.  What do you think? Agree or not?  Here they are:  (in no special order)

Here's a review of the book from Debby Guyette at Cataromance:

A Charlene Sands book is a guarantee for reading pleasure. Her newest book, Million Dollar Marriage Merger is proof positive. Tony is fantastic hero who pursued a dream and then returned home for one purpose only to find another. Rena had loved Tony with all her heart only to have it trampled when he left. She was not willing to allow that to happen again but knew practicality dictated her accept his offer. A marriage started for all the wrong reasons, could it lead to all the right reasons? Be sure and pick up Million Dollar Marriage Merger to find out. You will be glad you did. Charlene Sands will be penning more in this series – something we can all look forward to.

What are you watching on TV?

Now that the Olympics are over and though I enjoyed them, I'm glad to have regular TV programming back. I usually don't watch TV during the day until Days of Our Lives comes on. I take a lunch break then and relax with the "friends" I've known for 25 years. It's a good break to my writing day.   Allison Sweeney is the host of The Biggest Loser and one of the key players on Days of our Lives.

I'm happy to see THE TONIGHT SHOW has come back. I fall asleep (no offense, Jay) right after his monologue. My body's kind of conditioned to do that.

I'm watching LOST, and if you're Facebooking me, you know I've been talking about it there. Tuesdays are tough. I set my DVR for THE BIGGEST LOSER, watch AMERICAN IDOL, LOST and now the new show, PARENTHOOD.

What do you think of PARENTHOOD?  I saw the first episode and decided to give it a try for a few more weeks. I find the cast enjoyable and the storylines pretty good!
Some other favorite shows of mine are MENTALIST, MEDIUM and SMALLVILLE.  I guess you could say I'm a loyal fan. If I like the show, I usually never miss it.  I've watched Smallville since the beginning, when Clark Kent lived on the farm with his mom and dad.

DANCING WITH THE STARS is coming back too.  I'm never sure if I'll like the announced cast on that show, but as I get to know them, most of the stars grow on me.   Derek and Julianne are my favorite pros. I'm hoping Julianne returns this year.

So what are you watching?  Do we share some of the same favorites?  Are you waiting for V and Flash Forward to return?

Are you Watching the Olympics?

I have to admit that I love the Olympics ... those athletes and their amazingly inspiring stories just warm my heart.  But some are also so heartbreaking, like the Canadian skater, whose mother died of a heart attack just days before her debut on Olympic ice.  So sad.

Though I thought I'd be more "into" ice skating and ice dancing, I'm finding myself incredibly drawn to speed skating, short track skating, both men and women's downhill skiing and I'm incredibly fascinated by snowboarding.  It's newer and different and I've really never paid that much attention to the sport before this.  So it's new to me and refreshingly vivid and fun to watch.
Here's Apollo breaking the US Winter Games record for most medals - 7 in all so far!
I'm cheering on our athletes and have become a huge fan of Apollo Anton Ohno.  I was a fan before, but then I watched him dance on Dancing With Stars and loved, loved, loved him!  What a motivated athlete!   He seems truly humble and nice ... we need to see more of that in our sports figures, don't you agree?

Lindsay Vonn, the US Hockey Team, Shaun White and so many others have been truly incredible.  There's too many athletes for me to mention, but I'm proud of them all and know what determination they have, how much they've sacrificed and how truly passionate they are for their sport.

I'm so proud of our Olympic teams!

MILLION-DOLLAR COVER

THE FIRST BOOK IN MY NAPA VALLEY VOWS SERIES IS AVAILABLE NOW
From Duty to Desire

He’d kept a promise to marry his best friend’s widow. But even an obligatory marriage could not diminish the hunger vintner Tony Carlino still felt for Rena Montgomery. Foolishly, he’d walked away from her once before…and she had never forgiven him. As far as she was concerned, no one would be toasting this arrangement any time soon.

She had married Tony only for the safety his name—and money—would give her, her winery…and her unborn child. Never could she allow herself to reveal the desire she felt for her new husband. For their marriage was meant to be only about business. Neither dared speak one word about love.

We're floating!!

We're in a drought here in Southern California and for the past few days we've been hit with 3 rainstorms. I actually think I heard thunder and lightning!

It's a case of be careful what you wish for! We're all floating ... California isn't designed for so much rain. We don't have great drainage systems. Trees are fallings, mud from the recent fires will slide and any minute now, I expect my cable to go out. I'm only hoping we don't have a n electrical power outage -- though I'm prepared. You can't live in Earthquake country and not be prepared with batteries, flashlights, food and water, the essentials in a quake.

There has even been a threat of tornados due to the forceful wind swirls in the area. But this rain is nothing compared to the freezing cold weather in other parts of the country.
It's just that ... well, we're wimps! We're not used to this. Our streets congest, our raingutters clog, people get irritable.

And I know that we're all looking for the ever present California sun to come out.

Like I said, we're wimps.

Just saying ...
