A fun little contest.
In Smooth-Talking the Hometown Girl, Kyle Warren lives in a big city but returns to his small hometown of Bentley, Arizona to settle his father's estate where he meets up with Christy, the pretty girl next door. His return reminds him of what small-town life was like. I'd love to know if you prefer a big city story or a small town tale? It could be both or neither.

Hmm, I think I prefer living in a big city. I've come to accept that I am an urban dwelling woman. BUT I love reading about small towns and they are my ultimate fantasy and escape. Unfortunately, in real life they don't have too many Trader Joe's in small towns and I need my Trader Joe's!

I love reunion romances--they are usually very poignant and heartfelt, not to mention passionate! Even though I have lived in a very small town for most of my life, I never tire of “small town” romances. Small towns sometimes hold big secrets! People are very interconnected. What happens to one person affects someone else, and the ripple effect is started. However, there is an essential sweetness to small towns. Memories of earlier days, some bittersweet, are held dear. People aren’t just faces, they’re family and friends. There’s always a second chance for first loves in small towns : )

So, any "hanky-panky" has to be hidden for fear that it will spread like wildfire. There is nothing more human and humorous than small town gossip that helps to weave a good plot. I prefer to read stories about small towns. Living in a big city already, I'd prefer to be taken away from the hustle and bustle.
Both, while I may lean a little more to the small towns I can really get into a story set in a city I've visited because I can easily visualize the setting.
Big cities are great with the right story but I definitely prefer small towns. You more often get to read about those quirky, in-your-business, characters that sometimes you love and that sometimes get on your nerves. But they're almost always fun to read about.
Small towns. There is always someone you can count on, always someone close and more open to helping vs not. I have seen people openly ignore others in a large city. I live in a large city for work, but was born and raised in a small town and visit regularly.

In general, probably big cities. I do think that authors who write small town stories tend to use more background info and make the small town almost a character. Many big city stories could be plunked down into any city because there's so little background/setting.

They both have their positive points, but if I had to pick one it would be the big city. I like the sense of excitement and knowing that anything could be around the next corner. I also like when real landmarks or famous buildings are part of the story because it helps me feel like I'm there.
It really depends on what my mood is and what I have read a lot of recently. I like to read stories set in all kinds of different towns and countries because I love seeing how it affects the outcome of a story and the personalities of the people in the stories . I like the personality of small town Midwestern men and women in stories the most though.

For me, it depends on the storyline. For a quirky romantic storyline, the small town and it's residents can add a lot of humor and flavor to a story. For a lot of paranormal or urban fantasy stories, the big city setting, and sense of anonymity it gives the characters, is what fits better.
While I tend to read a lot of small town settings, I can appreciate the world building and big city setting in a sprawling paranormal storyline.

I enjoy both, but if I REALLY have to choose I'd go with small town. There's a sense of family amongst everyone in a small town. Everyone has a vested interest in their neighbor and therefore are always in on the action. There's many colorful and unique characters in a small town that add to a storyline as well.

Plus I adore many of Pamela Morsi's Americana books, which probably formed the bulk of my opinion about romance set in small towns.

I have lived in a large city my entire life except for going away to college. Skyscrapers and huge malls can't begin to compete in interest with small cafes and shops where one is likely to run into someone you know and perhaps even know the owner. Here folks don't even know who lives in their block. Give me small town stories every time.
I go to stories and novels to escape to a different world, time, and place, and since I've lived in big cities for the past 15 years, I tend to prefer small-town tales. They also tend to have the more colorful, multidimensional characters with interesting back stories and relationships between them, which makes for a more compelling plot. I like them both. Both locales have something to offer. The setting has much to do with how a story will progress and unfold. Big cities have much to offer, life is at a faster pace, and it is easy to get lost or loose yourself. Small towns are a bit more relaxed, but everyone tend to know just about everything about you. You may want to get lost, but they won't let you.

I prefer a small town. I grew up in a small town and it was wonderful. I knew everybody from town and if I ever needed anything they were always there to help me. Everyone watched out for each other. It was great.
I live in a city where they are trying to be a lot like Dallas. I miss it when it was "small town" that didn't have a Walmart on every corner and shopping centers everywhere. I miss the small town and when we move in a few years, that is probably where we will end up.

In fiction, I love small towns. I love the neighborly, community feel of them in the stories. It's comforting to the characters to come home to them, almost like wrapping up in your favorite blanket. Even in real life, I like the quaintness of a small town.
However, as for where I want to live in real life, I'd pick the city every time. I'm too spoiled to the city's conveniences, and I dislike that, in small towns, everyone knows everyone else's business.

While widespread public transportation and a huge variety of restaurants and shops are great, I prefer small towns.
I like sitting on my front porch chatting to people walking their dogs or riding their bikes with their kids. I like watching fireflies at night. I like that the biggest reason to lock your car is NOT that you are afraid of being robbed, but that you are afraid of having someone leave rhubarb in your car.
I like the small town settings. Probably because I grew up in one. For better or worse it had its mark on me.
I grew up in a small town, and although I'm glad I no longer live in one, I still enjoy the "slice of life" stories set in small towns. Small towns are great for storytelling.

I'm a big reader and it all depends on the writer...if its Jennifer Weiner or jennifer coburn or Jodi picoult it could be anywhere. Good chick lit is so hard to find. Lol. In general tho I'd pick big city, because there are too many mediocre authors writing about small towns and they just drag and drag. So my head almost starts to hurt as soon as I hear small town in a book now...lol. but with a good author..I'd read about anywhere. Once as a teen I remember reading a book about a girl whose family had been chosen to be part of a city living on the moon for a year..and I loved it.
