HOLLYWOOD-NESS AND STAR SIGHTINGS

I’ve always wanted to write about a Hollywood starlet and a cowboy because I grew up in a community situated over the hill from Hollywood. Hollywood-ness is sort of ingrained in you if you live in Southern California. There’s no escaping the film industry in the TMZ (Thirty Mile Zone) and Hollywood in particular.

Grauman's Chinese Theater
I remember my Hollywood Bowl days and seeing acts like The Young Rascals and The Doors in concert. Yep, it was just me and Jim Morrison… and thousands of other screaming fans flocking that seashell outdoor venue. On the weekends, my girlfriends and I would stroll along Hollywood Boulevard, eyes glued downward as we called out the names of legends engraved on star-shaped plaques on the sidewalk, the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  We'd walk by Grauman's Chinese Theatre and look at the handprints of the stars embedded in concrete. It was no big deal. Hollywood and Highland was familiar to us and our home in a way. We walked the walk and talked the talk and it was a fun time, being in the “know” about things that most people only dream about.

David Boreanaz

Star sightings occur often when you live in So Cal. My hubby and I frequent our local promenade mall because we love the atmosphere, good eats and going to the movies. Recently, at a restaurant I sat across from Pierce Brosnan- aka James Bond 007. I’ve rubbed shoulders, figuratively speaking with Katherine Heigl in a fast food joint.

Sharon and Ozzie Osbourne were perusing the shelves, his black cape and all, in a boutique next to Barnes and Noble where I was shopping… You can’t miss Ozzie… that’s all I’ve got to say. Howie Mandell was texting on his phone at the table next to mine at our local yogurt shop and stopped to chat it up with a few fans that had approached him. Seems like a really nice guy.

Will Smith decided to have a go at early morning bowling at the lanes where I bowl on a team. Yes, he has a striking smile. And David Boreanaz (Bones) walked right by me at restaurant recently—handsome guy that he is.
Barry Manilow

But probably the most memorable for me, was having tall, lanky, and disguised with ball cap, Barry Manilow sitting directly behind me in the movie theatre. I remember thinking that it had better be a great movie, or I’ll never be able to sit still knowing that he was in the seat behind mine. I have always loved Barry. Yikes!

At that same movie theater one evening I spotted a bunch of young teenagers curbside, giggling like giddy teens do and smiled to myself, thinking that I remembered those Friday-night-out-with-friends myself. And then I took a better look at the blonde All-American boy in that group of six and realized it was mega-star Justin Beiber – just your normal teen out with his friends.

My idea of Macy Tarlington

My idea of Carter McCay

Exquisite Acquisitions is a story with a little twist on the Hollywood scene. Macy is not your average movie star. She’s the daughter of a legend and wants a little peace in her life. Enter, hunky, heroic and recently jilted, Carter McCay who recognizes Macy’s heartache, if not her celebrity and whisks her away to Wild River Ranch for a little R and R. Carter is not a cowboy wannabe like the guys Macy has known. He’s the real deal… need I say more?

Yes, I have had close encounters, but I have not asked for autographs. I figure this is their personal time, say hi and smile, and then leave. If I wanted an autograph, I should go to a special event where autographs are "part of the job".

I don't have anybody on my "wish list" for autographs. To me, they are people, just like me and you. Now if I could spend an evening with George Clooney - without it affecting my happily married status - that might be a different story, LOL!

Hi Laney4- Yep, I leave the stars alone. I'm not star struck. I love certain actors, but I wouldn't intrude on them to ask for an autograph. For you, it's George, for me- Hugh Jackman!!

Laney4 said...

Ahhh, Hugh. What a fine man he is, he is. One of his attributes (to me) is that he still appears to be in love with his wife of many years. Now THAT'S a real man.

Speaking of real men, I can't forget to mention Mark Harmon. He brings a smile to my face every time too....

When I lived in Pacific Palisades I ran into quite a few stars and soon learned they're just like us. Only prettier and richer. ; ) I never bother with autographs though because they're just trying to live their lives. If it's a definite promo or signing I might, but just shopping or eating in a restaurant I don't.

I have never met any movie star, but I have met a few singers. Tom Jones for one and a Canadian singer on the stage, Michael Burgess, he played the lead parts in Phantom of the Opera and Les Mis. I met him at Toronto annual Wine and Food Show.. My company's had a booth and I was working it one evening.. He was very nice and we had a nice few minutets.

Recently I read an article about a guy who is a tour guide in Hollywood. He told of how much bigger his tips were when the riders spotted a movie star.

Many years ago I met Deidre Hall from Days of Our Lives. She was signing autographs and there was a news team there so I ended up on the news that night with her. I also met Bing Crosby, James Brolin and Jim Nabors years ago when I worked at the San Francisco airport.
I would love to meet Josh Holloway from Lost, I loved that show.

I haven't met any movie stars, but I did meet Jim Brickman and Christopher Cross. It was at a special concert that only the people who won tickets could attend. I did get their autographs at a special signing afterwards.
That said, I wouldn't approach an actor/singer in public and ask for an autograph. Of course, if they wanted to ask me for one, that would be okay. LOL

Ginger said...

This is a question for Laney4...
Please tell me what type of dog that is in your picture. I had a stray dog come up three years ago, when he was still a big puppy, and he looks just like that picture. Thanks

Laney4 said...

Ginger, that is a golden retriever (that belonged to friends). I used to dogsit "Austin" whenever his owners went out of the country. The owners' daughter up the street from us used to do it, but she was working all day, her kids were in school all day, and Austin was alone all day-and often at night too. He was not a happy camper, so I offered to take him here instead, as I work from home. Austin followed me everywhere and would open one eye every 5 minutes or so to ensure I was still there beside him when napping. Austin was 12 when that pic was taken. He died in May/11 at a week short of 14 years of age. I miss him daily still, as we dogsat him a total of a couple of months a year or more for three years straight. He was the most intelligent dog I have ever met. He rarely barked. He didn't need to, as he just gave you "the look". The look could mean "I'm hungry" or "I've gotta go out" or "I'm not feeling well-do you want me to barf inside or outside-your choice!" The only time he barked was when I was on the phone ignoring him and he had to go out-desperately, apparently. During his last 1.5 years, I had to help carry him up the steps because his back legs were too arthritic (which is a common problem for golden retrievers). He was one heavy dog, but I'd place his front paws on the steps and carry his back end upward. Wasn't a pretty sight, but it meant he could keep me company when I had to be downstairs working. I can still feel his love, as I hope he can still feel mine for him. Thank you for asking. I hope you enjoy lots of love with your dog (too).

Hi Charlene

Well i live in the Fiji Islands. We do have Hollywood stars who cometo our shores for vacations and stuff but usually they fly off to the smaller resort islands. They don't spend much time on the main island.

Although i have seen Raven Symone and Corbin Bleu when they came down for a visit last year.

Looking forward to reading your latest release Exquisite Acquisitions. It sounds like a page turner.

To Laney4 Thank you for the information. I am sorry for your loss; I know how it feels to lose a pet.
My dog, Sandy, loves to spend most of the time outside playing with my Labadore Retriever, playing fetch with me, and swimming in the lake. I do feel lucky to have him. :)

The very first TV stars I saw were Rin Tin Tin, Rusty, and the Lieutenant back in the 50's. It was a big deal having them come to our little out of the way corner of the world. More recently, we stumbled upon them filming the third episode of THE GLADE in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before the series premiered. We talked with the crew about what was going on and hung out for a while. We just missed them filming the storm. It wasn't until later that we realized we were talking with the show's main actors.
No actor autographs, just lots from musicians we have seen perform, mostly celtic groups.

I would like to have met Katharine Hepburn. She was an intelligent, outspoken woman. I'm sure it would be interesting.

Thanks so much for this cool winning opportunity - I never had the chance to meet any celebrities - LOL - I live a very boring life! Already a subscriber! This book sounds fun! I'll definitely have to check it out.

As for celebrities, yes, I've met a few, but living in Memphis most of them were musicians. I guess Robert Plant was the biggest star I ever met in person.

But they really are "just people". If you ever meet someone famous in person, try not to be starstruck. It's hard, I know. :) But try to talk about something else besides their work and you'll have them eating out of your hand. I met Brian Dennehy once while he was filming a movie here and we talked about fishing. Yes, fishing! He was very gracious and we talked for about an hour. Even after he'd film a scene, he'd come back and talk to me some more (because making a movie involves lots and lots...and LOTS!... of waiting around).

Fun topic! I'm enjoying reading everyone's encounters. :)

My first encounter w/ a 'celebrity' was many moons ago maybe around the age of 13 or 14, and it was some soap opera star. I can't even remember what show or what his name was, but I remember he was hot. lol He was the only one that I actually tried to see or whatever. The rest just kinda happened.
I used to have a job where I would occasionaly run into a few, or my co-workers would. Some were so darn cool (golfers) and sat and BS'd w/ them for awhile and I got their autograph. Some celebrities wouldn't come off of the aircraft....oh well...
Yrs ago I wrote to Matthew McConaughey and asked for his and he actually personalized a photo of himself to me: now that was most awesome.
I'm not one to intrude on personal life. I don't buy magazines at all, unless you count Tattoo magazines. I can't think of anyone right now that I would love to meet or get an autograph of. Yeah, I don't know...
(My husband got to meet and get his picture taken w/ Ken Griffey Jr last month. Actually he's met quite a few people too w/ his current job)
Ok, ok, I've rambled enough...

Can't imagine growing up there! My greatest sighting was here in Minnesota. During my college years I was a camp counselor. On our night off, we often went out to local places to hang out. One night we went ot a bar/restaurant. It had three levels, one for the restaurant and two that were bar/dance areas. We usually took over the third floor, since this wasn't a huge palce and there many of us. We heard that Paul Newman was there eating. So my co-cabin counselor went down to the lower lever to supposedly use the cigarette machine, And there he was. He was in town for a race (Brainerd,MN - Brainerd Internatiional Raceway) and was there with his crew. We didn't bother him or anyhtign. Just walked by and then looked once we were at the machine. What I found so endearing (and let me just sya that Paul Newman has always been a big crush of mine) was taht he was cutting the steak his son had ordered. Scott was quite young at the time. Paul wasn't being famous, just a dad cutting his son's meat and hanging out with the guys. I did shake Ted Kennedy's hand once. My closest encounter.

mainly met them at plkaces i worked Like a casino (often get the famous rugby guys in) and once at a museum where they had a charity car run to raise money for heart foundation they had plenty of local celebs and sports stars to support it and met them shook their hand and posed for pics in local paper etc

and no i didnt ask for autographs theres a time and place for that ...
kinda annoys me when at meets (like the ones were the fans are behind a barrier and the star walks up to them up the street) and several hundred bring stuff to sign and often whack other ppl with their books / banners or posters
i mean they can sign a few but not several 1000 ....

I was working in the pharmacy at one entrance and they came in the other entrance to buy some flowers for someone they were visiting in the area. Of course we weren't told about it until after they had left the store but we were at least able to print out a photo of them from the security camera.

I'd like to meet Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery and Harrison Ford to name a few.

I wouldn't know half of these young celebrities if I ran into them face to face.

I'm already on your mailing list.

Back in the day (1950s) I met film star
Mark Damon and TV stars The Cisco Kid
and Pancho. May I count my son? He is

quite a few visiting celebrities.

Would love to meet David Boreanaz and

Hi Charlene, I'm already a newsletter subscriber and thanks for the link to your blog. I'm a blog stalker. I spend hours just jumping from one person's blog to another based on their comments. I've found some really great blogs that way.

Anyway, to answer your star struck question. Nope, I've never bumped into or really been close to a star before. Being from Iowa (the anti-vacation capital of the Midwest) I don't have many opportunities. I wouldn't mind rubbing elbows with some of the stars mentioned...Nathan Fillion and Hugh Jackman for sure. Ryan Reynolds, definitely. But honestly I'd be more excited to see my favorite authors!

I am also a subscriber and I posted on my FB page under Jeanne Sheats! The only person I've seen that is considered a movie star was years ago and it was Jack Benny in an airport but he was moving so fast I didn't have a chance.

Many years ago I went to a show and went back stage afterward for autographs. One was Agnes Moorhead, she was a great actress. Would love to get one from Hugh Jackman and Nathan Fillian. Have posted to facebook for you and liked on Amazon. Before I read your news letter I had already posted a review on goodreads. Ruthacmom@aol.com

A couple years ago my daughter and I took the grandkids to a Little Gym in the LA area and Chad Everett was there with his twin grandsons and since I am a twin we talked about what great fun his grandsons were going to have being a twin. I was saddened to hear of his recent passing. My mother went to high school in Colorado with the actor -Ken Curtis--who played Festus on long running Gunsmoke series so when he came to town we always got to see him and talk with him.

Hugh Grant (major sigh) was in Atlanta a few years ago and we ate at the same restaurant 2 tables apart. He's just as good looking in person as on the screen, but not nearly as approachable.

Love your blog and newsletter~

I saw Charleton Heston. His wife Lydia Clarke was from my hometown, Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Several years ago, a middle school was named after her father, educator, LB Clarke. Charleton and his wife attended the dedication ceremony.

I haven't seen any other famous people.

I'd love to meet Sean Connery, Michelle Obama and Paul McCartney.

I would love to meet Sean Connery. I have met several stars, from Hulk Hogan, Christina Ricci, Ron Howard and Mohammad Ali to rock stars, singers and band members. Most everyone I've met and taken pictures with or gotten autographs from are very nice. If you are polite, knowledgable of the person and their career, I find they will be more receptive to you.

I have actually had contact with two movie stars. Dale Evans Rogers was at our church in Decatur, Il. when I was growing up. She came out into audience and shook hands with me and my Mom (who is now in Heaven). She talked to people. Also met another one off Lawrence Welk (my mind just went blank - getting old) She held my daughter while helping with fund raiser for our tv at church and sang carrying her around.

Wow! Sounds like you have some fun stories. Though I have to say, it is so unfair that Katherine Heigl can eat fast food and still look the way she does! Where is the justice in that? :-D

Hi Charlene!

When I was visiting Paris there was a crowd in front of a cinema so I asked what was happeneing and they told me Tom Cruise was there promoting his latest movie. He stood about 1.5 meters from me. I also saw a premiere and the celebrity crowd in London and met and talked with Richard Armitage and asked for his autograph, he was a sweetheart and so handsome!
