HOW TO POP THE QUESTION WITH STYLE! Making Marriage Proposals Fun and a Contest!

Marriage proposals have changed quite a bit since the day when a man simply dropped down to one knee and offered up a ring to his lady love.  Nowadays it seems grooms go to great lengths to ask for their love's hand in marriage.

THE PRIVATE PROPOSAL

When my son asked his wife for her hand, while she was out of town, he fixed their favorite dinner, arranged flowers and petals everywhere. The house was illuminated in the soft romantic glow of a hundred small, large and heart-shaped candles placed strategically around the rooms. The mood was set.  When his unsuspecting girlfriend walked inside, she was astonished and fully surprised. It was fun and romantic and of course, he went down on one knee with a ring to propose.

My daughter's husband, had taken her to a charming Bed and Breakfast along the shores of Santa Barbara Beach.  While she was luxuriating in a Spa Treatment, he arranged twinkle lights in the gorgeous foliage in the garden outside and set the scene for her surprise. He'd also created a crossword puzzle and a loving tribute to her on his computer screen and while they were sitting on a benchseat, amid the sparkling lights, he proposed to her.

Another way to surprise her is to have the staff at your hotel arrange words "Marry me" on your bed and hide the ring under the pillow.

Or pre-write the words "Marry Me" in the sand along your favorite private beach path.

Or sneak into her computer and change her screensaver to say "I love you. Marry me?"  along with a loving picture of the two of you.

WANT HER TO SAY YES?

Don't ask too soon in the relationship.

Speak of marriage in vague terms often to gauge her feelings on the subject.

Be sure she is the ONE.

THE KNOT

According to The Knot , a site exclusive to weddings and marriage,  here are a few fun suggestions for a successful public proposal:
1.Take out a full-page ad in a newspaper you know your girlfriend reads daily.

2. Arrange a surprise proposal with a street caricaturist. Have him sketch a picture of you two with word bubbles. Yours will read, "Will you Marry Me?", and hers will say, "Yes!"

3. Pay the divers at an aquarium to put on a proposal show inside their biggest fish tank. Give them handwritten signs that say "Will You Marry Me?" to hold up against the glass.

4. Send your girlfriend on a treasure hunt. Start with a clue at home, then send her on a tour of your favorite spots all over town. When she gets to the last hint, the prize should be you on one knee.

5. Go out for a night of dancing, and ask the DJ or band leader to pass you the mic so that you can dedicate a song and propose on the dance floor.

6. Have a friend or family member set up a picnic -- complete with wine and cheese, or course -- for you in a park. Take your girlfriend for a hike on a route where you'll stumble upon this surprise "Proposal Picnic."

7. Hire a skywriter to spell your proposal for everyone around to see.

8. Flying anytime soon? Use the plane's loud-speaker system (of course, run your plan by the flight attendants first) and propose at 35,000 feet.

9.Movie buffs? Ask your neighborhood theater to run an ad featuring your proposal and make sure you get there in time for the previews.

10. Gather a bunch of your friends and family for a party. Have everyone in attendance put on a T-shirt bearing one of the letters in the phrase "Will You Marry Me?" When you walk in the room with your girlfriend, suggest a group picture and let the shirts speak for themselves.

My husband proposed in my living room of my apartment. We were listening to records and it was a special time of closeness. Then later he proposed again in front of his parents and put the engagement ring on my finger. We bought my engagement ring from my brother because his marriage had ended. We have been married going on 33 years so it worked. I would like the Amazon gift card.

Personally, I love the idea of #2, the caractature drawer drawing the proposal on the street! What a fun idea! I love your website! Let's just say that I don't recommend MY marriage proposal/acceptance for others.... Apparently we didn't follow the rules noted above, but it WAS 30 years ago, so perhaps those rules weren't in existence back then. MY husband and I started dating Labor Day weekend (although we had known each other from afar for a year or two earlier). He bought my ring in October and joined my family 100 miles away for Christmas, where he proposed after all the other gifts were opened. As I sat in stunned disbelief (because I was 21, he was 31, and it was much too soon for my liking), he asked me to marry him, and my MOTHER said, "Of course she will!" I didn't have much of a backbone back in those days, but I DID say I'd think about it for the next couple of weeks, as it was too early for me. Needless to say, I accepted two days later (after writing out lists of why/why not I wanted to be married/married to him - and the list to get married was much shorter, but to me it was the quality and not the quantity of those reasons that mattered the most), and we wed the following July.

I don't pay attention to others' proposals, as mine is uppermost in my mind at all times, even all these years later. As for your list above, I'd go with the picnic in the park, as I wouldn't want this private moment shared with numerous others.

gds said...

Wow. Such elaborate suggestions. It would be fun and romantic but I think that anytime the proposal comes from the heart, it would be spectacular enough for me. I'm sure my husband's proposal wouldn't be over the top enough for most but it worked for me! :>)

Diane said...

All of those suggestions are great but Hubby and I are very private persons and I preferred his proposal: we were at his parent's house and they were out, we were having a quiet evening talking about where we would like to be 10 years from then and that's when he proposed. It will be 33 years this July, 2 kids and still very much in love.

mcv said...

I've been married for 30+ years and I'm sorry to say that I don't remember a specific proposal much less a dramatic one like the ones you posted here. What happened is we were dating for a year or more and we talked about marriage as the next step. The subject was out in the open and we slowly decided that we would get married. It wasn't a surprise and it wasn't dramatic, but everything worked out well.

I was really sick from the flu and my soon to be husband said he had to go to the store to pick up something. So when he returned I was in my PJ's mind you and I needed a Kleenex. So he handed me the Kleenex box and sitting in the box was a ring case. He got down on his knee and asked me if I wanted to Marry him, and he repeated the line," And in Sickness and Health, will you be my wife"? I knew then I had to marry this Wonderful Man that was worried about my health. It may not have been Romantic for some, but for me it was Heaven. We have been married for 11 years and still going strong.

I don't know. Those all kind of give me the creeps. Marriage is so much more important than weddings or proposals, and it's so very much not performance art, but partnership and joint creation. Mary Ann amaebi@mail2world.com

I am surprised that no one mentioned the ring in a glass of champagne... or baked into a mini cake. How about ballons that spell out the question? Seashells on the beach or apple picking- have the ring wrapped around an apple and she picks it? Or a custom wine label asking. I would suggest whatever way you decide- have fun. This will be something that is remembered for a very long time.

While I think some of the public proposals are really cute, sometimes they backfire. Like the guy who proposed on the Jumbotron at a football game, in front of 10s of thousands, and she got up and ran out on him...in front of 10s of thousands, all captured by the TV camera guy. Guys, make sure you propose in a way that your girl would love...whether public or private!

Personally, I go for private and romantic...a rooftop dinner if you live in the city, a walk at dusk by the beach, sitting by the campfire at a secluded campsite. Somewhere you both like to be together.

One of my closest friends had her husband propose when they were standing in front of Cinderella's castle at the Happiest Place on Earth--he told her to look up, and the little plane flying overhead was trailing a banner with his question to her :) I'm not a very public person, so I liked the at-home proposal DH created for me :) He welcomed me home from a business tirp with an at-home beach picnic, complete with a CD of beach sounds and a ring tucked into the dessert container ;p

Oh I do love the idea of a surprise proposal or some kind treasure hunt. Makes things exciting as long as it isn't too complicated, don't want things to go wrong for the groom-to-be!

I'm not married but I know I wouldn't want a public proposal. Something more private would be great. Maybe he could take me to one of the places that are special just to us as a couple.

I loved reading everyone's ideas and proposal experiences here! I can dream about my turn! LOL

I have two favorite proposals from the ten you gave. I love number 2 with the street caricaturist. I think its a smart and fun idea. I have seen a high school friend of mine got engaged that way. I also love number 4 having to do a treasure hunt is so much fun. It is definitely unexpected fun. Love it. I just got engaged last month. My fiance is not creative at all so it was just a simple do you want to spend the rest of my life with me. And then he took the ring out of his pocket. He didn't get on his knees because they were hurting him.

Proposals always make me cry. They are so romantic. I love to see how others express their love for one another.
One of my favs(from a TV show) was from Friends. Monica tried to propose to Chandler and then he proposed to her. The room was a lit with candles and they stated that they loved each other, while their friends/roommates stood outside and listened.
You are a new author for me and would love to win and read this book.

Some of these tips are fun, but I prefer your son's and daughter's proposals, they are much more personal and intimate. My nightmare is the huige proposal in the restaurant/in front of my whole family, I would feel so awkward being in the spot I wouldn't be able to utter a yes..ugh. Much prefer those proposals where only the bride and groom to be are present.

Thank you for the wonderful giveaway and congrats on the new release!

I think I would want my proposal to be much more private than many of these were.

My DH literally flew half way around the world to propose. I was in the Peace Corps in the Philippines. I had gone home for Christmas after extending for a third year and say an old high school friend at an AF base when I stopped to visit my cousin and her husband (and deal with jet lag). He came over for dinner and took the 3 of us out to dinner. That was it. We hadn't seen each other for 7 years and had only been casual friends in school. Five months later, he wrote to say he was visiting friends at Clark AFB in the Philippines and they wanted to come up for the town fiesta. He and the couple (friends of his parents) visited for about a week. Before they left, we were sitting on the sofa and he asked me to marry him when I got back to the States. We never really dated and only saw each other those few times before I accepted and we were planning our wedding. It was definitely the right decision. He is a wonderful man and we will be celebrating our 40th anniversary this June.

I like the private proposals, but enjoyed all your examples. My DH and I have been married for 38 years and he never asked me to marry him. We were out shopping one day and he just said "There's the jewelry counter. Let's pick out your engagement ring. -- and we did.

Oh wow, so many wonderful, sweet, and romantic proposals. They sound straight out of a romance novel.

My husband's proposal 35 years ago wasn't a big romantic gesture, but it touched my heart anyway. He was so unsure of himself, and so he said these exact words: "MAYBE, SOMEDAY, we MIGHT want to THINK about getting married." Once I gave a favorable response, he got a little more sure of himself, but his first sentence is what charmed me.

i think if you have a girlfriend who is really into murder mysteries, you should send her a plain brown paper parcel, address with a blue crayon and tied up with twine, inside should be an alarmclock that is audibly ticking.(like one of those "big Ben" ones. of course include your proposal. if she freaks and calls in the bomb squad, it will be even better than if she opens it herself. be prepared for several lectures. (you can take it, after all, you're the "man" right?

There was a little broken down fence where he stopped, reached in his pocket, pulled out the ring and gave me a questioning look. It was perfect. You see, we had picked out the ring almost 2 years earlier and were just waiting for me to graduate. I was pretty much a sure thing!

Hi-fi speakers are utilized along with a hi-fi speakers. Even though these speakers don't directly connect right into a computer you'll be able to connect some type of computer straight to the hi-fi speaker receiver. This enables you to play all of the audio from the computer within the larger, stronger hi-fi system. Doing this only takes a few additional cables and a few minutes of your energy.

Connect the wires running out the trunk of the hi-fi speakers to the speaker "In" ports on the trunk of the receiver. Plug the 3. 5 mm cable to the 3. 5 mm "Line-Out" port on the pc. This is actually the same port you connect your pc speakers to. Insert the 3. 5 mm end of the 3. 5 mm to RCA audio cable to the open end on the 3. 5 mm cable running from the computer. Plug the RCA audio end of the cable to the "Audio In" port on the hi-fi speakers. Power on the pc and the hi-fi system. The audio from the computer now runs from the computer to the connected receiver and plays through the hi-fi speakers.

Some of the renting arrangements will give you an option to personal the car after the agreement ends. There are a number of options that you need to consider before having Car Loans in Melbourne. Be sure that you have all the authority over your choice because you are the one paying the loan. You usually have the choice not to take entirely what the seller offers with you. Ensure that you possess the ample fund that won't complicate your own repayment monthly. There'll always be other places to shop financial loans in. The web is one channel where you can find great deals on car loans and companies that provide other options. You can always ask questions with friends and neighbors regarding best companies that offer excellent options on car financial loans. You can always pay a free visit with banks and other lenders so that you can have comparison to which you can greatly take advantage of. Car loans are expensive, everybody knows that.
